Using the double brackets around things is what creates those interesting links.
Describing an external URL is done by enclosing it in double brackets, and then a space and then your smart words, like:
[[http://ruk.ca|Ruk.ca is a fine website]]
That gives: [Ruk.ca is a fine website]
